Who should attend the ALETA Academy?
Under present law, every “peace officer,” is required to successfully pass the minimum training requirements established by the P.O.S.T. Council within one year of employment. Furthermore, any full-time post certified peace officer hired before January 1, 1986 and who has an “interruption of service”, meaning they were employed in a non-public law enforcement capacity, in excess of five years, is required to attend a full 496 hour basic training course at an accredited Academy. Questions of eligibility should be directed to the P.O.S.T. Council staff.
Can I enroll in the academy without being sponsored by an agency?
No. You must be sponsored by an agency.
Can I receive college credits by attending ALETA?
Yes, the following colleges offer credits upon completion of ALETA:
ULL Lafayette and SLCC: 6 credit hours
LSU Eunice: 12 credit hours"
Do I need a High School education to attend the Academy?
No. The only requirement is that you are employed by a law enforcement agency.
Do we have to supply our own Ammunition?
You have the option of either supplying your own (1200 rounds handgun and 800 rounds 5.56 if taking Patrol Rifle Course or 1500 rounds if taking handgun only) or paying ALETA for the use of their ammunition. The cost will be $500 for handgun and patrol rifle or $300 for handgun only.
Do you require payment prior to attending the Academy?
No. The sponsoring agency will receive an invoice from the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office within the first two weeks of the academy.
How long has ALETA been in existence?
The first ALETA class was held on October 4, 1976 with a total of 17 cadets enrolled. Since that time, over 4,300 cadets have graduated from ALETA and were certified as peace officers for the State of Louisiana. ALETA is one of the 27 academies in Louisiana certified by the Peace Officers Standards and Training Council to offer the Basic Police Training Course.
How much does it cost to attend the Academy?
a. The cost for attending the Academy is $1000.00 for the full 15-week long session, and $500.00 for attendance as a Refresher or Transition. There is an additional charge if your agency would like to purchase ammunition from ALETA instead of your agency supplying the ammunition for your cadet. Your cadet will need 1,200 rounds for handgun and 800 rounds for the Patrol Rifle course. If your cadet is only attending the handgun course, 1,500 rounds will need to be provided. Your agency will receive an invoice during the Academy. The cost will be $500 for handgun and patrol rifle or $300 for handgun only.
b. Payments can be made by the individual peace officer by cash or check. But they still must be sponsored by an agency to attend the Academy.
What are the physical requirements?
In participating in the physical fitness program, you are NOT required to meet pass/fail standards for the
Academy and POST Council. However, the POST Council mandates that you MUST participate in all phases of the physical fitness program. A grade will be given for physical training that will be tallied as a test score to average together with other scores.
What are the requirements to enter the Academy?
To enter the Academy, you must be a commissioned Peace Officer working full-time or a commissioned
reserve officer sponsored by the agency head of the department you are affiliated with.
What time do classes begin?
Classes at ALETA begin promptly at 0600 hours daily. All cadets are advised to understand that arrival any time after 0600 hours constitutes said cadet being late.
